The Birth of Japanaese Playgroup (Malaysia)

For the love of reading and translation, in 2017, Yvonne sensei founded a Facebook group - Japanese Playgroup Malaysia to share on interesting trivia and articles about Japan.

Another reason was my daughter. I'd organized Japanese playgroups for toddlers in my neighborhood, where moms and their kids would come over to play and learn Japanese with my daughter. We had fun learning Hiragana and mommies will bring over objects related to it.

Journey as a Japanese Sensei

Yvonne Sensei started teaching Japanese language part-time to College and Working Adults throughout her college years, but it wasn't until after the winter holiday in 2018/2019 that I returned to teaching Japanese.

I was looking for a Japanese language school to enroll my daughter in (age 5 then). However, most schools/centers in this area either do not accept students of such a young age or only have materials that are geared for working adults.

During our winter vacation back to Tokyo that year, we were joined by a family friend's family. When we returned from that trip, the mommy friend asked me to teach her daughters (age 7 and 9 then) Japanese language.

Because I wanted my daughter to learn Japanese, I decided to conduct research and studies on how to teach children the language, and a Japanese mother was gracious enough to send me all of her child's Japanese textbooks from grade one to sixth.

That is how Elementary Japanese for Children got its start and Yvonne sensei is now teaching children (as well as a few adults) from Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia.

The Pandemic - Online Sensei

Many friends got to know about me teaching Japanese and asked me to open a class to teach their children too. However, the excuse was always the lack of a conducive place.

After teaching the three girls for more than 7 months, pandemic hits the shore and on 18th March 2020, Malaysia government announced a lockdown.

All the mommies say "No more excuses, ini kali lah (this is the time)."

I took up the challenge and started my first online Japanese Elementary Class for Children on 31st March 2021. "Back then" Zoom was still an alien tool to many.

Beyond Children

Japanese grammars aren't the easiest to learn.

Yvonne Sensei understands the struggles of learning Japanese language, especially students from the English speaking countries. So I'd decided to host webinars based on specific topics, such as the Japanese Big 9 Particles, The introduction of Japanese Language and Culture among others.

Participants from different part of the world attended the Grammar webinar.
